More Money More Problems

Donating to nonprofit writing check

Consumer spending in the United States reached an all-time high of $12,061 billion in the first quarter of 2018. The United States unemployment rate saw an 18-year low of 3.8 percent in May 2018. And last month, 600,000 Americans entered a favorable job market where economists expected 195,000 payroll gains, according to USA Today’s June jobs report.

This growth in individual income has a positive correlation with charitable giving. In the nonprofit space, individual giving is expected to grow by 3.2 percent this year. It’s important that nonprofit leaders are adequately prepared for an impending surge in donations.

Donor trends in 2018

Of course, managing the complexities of increased donor giving is a good problem to have. As a result, several trends have emerged this year:

Diverse giving.

Different generations give differently, and it’s important to understand giving preferences when it comes to the state of donations in your organization. For example, the Millennial generation is known to be socially conscious and technologically savvy. Does your charitable giving platform offer mobile and Cloud-based options for these customers?

Transparent giving.

The 2018 consumer demands transparency. In a world where data privacy has been compromised time and again, individual donors want to feel confident in their charitable giving choices. Nonprofit agencies must be able to quickly and accurately report funding and spending for all stakeholders.

Supported giving.

Many customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) suppliers have cropped up recently in the nonprofit space. These platforms assist with documentation, logistics, and general administrative work that multiplies as agencies welcome new donors. The plethora of available solutions, however, can make nonprofit decision makers feel overwhelmed.
