In working with Microsoft Dynamics® GP customers around the country, I find one of the processes they are most interested in automating is that of calculating and managing employee leave time. Leave is typically comprised of varying combinations of vacation, sick, PTO and jury. Then, there are the really fun types of leave that come up in various industries - compensatory time, administrative leave, professional days and so on.
I always like to say that Microsoft has the most widely used HR system in the world – Excel. Excel is a great tool for tracking information; however, it does not help automate the processes around that information. As we discuss the management of these leave balances with our customers, the related manual processes include calculating the time, managing maximums, investigating discrepancies, and responding to inquiries. Depending on the size of the organization, these activities can range from a couple of hours to several days of a person’s time each pay period.
