What industry/industries are you currently focused on?
I'm currently focused on Distribution businesses. These entities are characterized by serving regional to national markets, selling at a high transaction volume, and coping with the challenge of declining margins and sales volume.
What do you see as the next big trend for that industry?
I see a significant pressure to reduce stocks of inventory - towards a "just in time" mode ... this necessitating a much more responsive system with almost immediate transaction processing cycles to produce useful and accurate business intelligence in almost real time.
What is the first question that you would ask someone who is considering a new solution for their organization?
Who are the industry leaders and how are they "going long" in this economy - ie positioning themselves to capture the largest most profitable market share in future's new order?
What was a small mistake that you’ve seen an organization make with their systems that had a big consequence?
I have clients that have purchased significant business intelligence horsepower - some of which could be implemented immediately for comparatively little cost - but have deferred the implementation indefinitely. In the most extreme example, it was determined that certain reporting was missing several months after the completion of the project and the client has been forced to compensate for a mistake in planning/priorities by filling a huge gap with consultants hired to perform basic accounting services.
